Major Guidance Activities for 2013 (i.e. what Brian has been up to in the last year).
It has been a long time since I posted anything. Running a business is very time-consuming and posting to a blog is not seemingly the most efficient use of time. However, I'm going to try to do better about posting to this blog.
In the meantime, I'd like to just highlight some of the work I've been doing over the past two years since I last updated this blog.
For most of my work, I continue to work with clients in the SE Minnesota area to develop websites. I am currently taking clients as well so if you know of anyone who would like a new website or updates to an existing website in most any technology (.Net/Java/PHP), I'd certainly appreciate your referrals :).
I have recently completed sites for the Northwestern singers (a site for which I'm actually working on updates at this time) - The Northwestern Singers. This site is in HTML as it stands today, however the update is all PHP and MySql content driven (due to the nature of the hosting provider). Although I haven't truly done MVC in the PHP environment, I am thoroughly enjoying this project update and it will be nice when the system is done to a point that all of the images, event, and sponsor content is handled through a web administration system by the board at NWS, rather than by me making updates to static html pages. I used a template for the layout but also built all of the graphics and tweaks to the layout while building the project.
I have also completed the design and development of the new website for Bollingberg Chiropractic - Bollingberg Chiropractic, for which I did all the layout and graphics, as well as built the application in MVC3. Currently, they are in the process of using the web administration system I built to update the content to complete the website.
In addition to these sites, I've been working on a management system to help Daylily Gardeners manage their plant details and photos. I ended up building a business-class application and have both learned a great deal in the process as well as enjoyed working with multiple libraries to deliver a solid product. The site is in WebForms with an MSSQL backend. Furthermore, to this point Google has not delivered a .Net library to interact with their services for Picasa/GPhotos in the Version 2 environment (v1 is slow, obsolete, and doesn't use OAuth2), so I ended up writing my own library, which I released on GitHub: .Net Google Picasa Utility. The library needs to be updated a bit and of course I should add some documentation. The management system for Daylilies can be found here: Phoebes Garden. The project uses OAuth2 through Google, so that was a fun piece to integrate into the project as well, and I'm so glad I don't have to store anyone's sensitive information on my side, nor do I have to store photos or files -- all of that is done through the user's own Google account.
In addition to the work for the business clients, I've also continued to teach, and build videos on Udemy. Currently I have two courses on the site, with one being private and free for my students in Comp 121 at Franklin COMP 121 on Udemy, and the other is an introduction to Java programming designed to help mentor and encourage online programming students to do well in their self-directed coursework at online universities such as CTU or the UoP Java Programming for Online Students, which is nearly complete and available already for purchase.
Additionally, at Franklin University, I am currently rotating teaching assignments between three courses: Comp 111, Comp 121 (level 1 & 2 programming, algorithms, and data structures), and Comp321 - Swing, JSP, and Servlet programming. I find my passion continues to lie in helping others become programmers with solid futures in the industry.
Currently, in my free programming time, I'm also messing around with the CreateJS library. I feel the industry on the whole is moving this direction and I expect that these libraries will be valid not only for gaming and other graphical uses, but for business use as well with charting and other reporting tools in the near future (if not already being leveraged). Create JS can be found here. Plus, it just seems like something fun to do/learn.
Of course my main projects almost always leverage JQuery and the JQuery UI.
Finally, when not working or teaching, I've been keeping busy with my singing and acting endeavors. I've recently completed a run of Spamalot, and am currently in rehearsal for a play based off of a movie for a local Outreach ministry. I also continue to sing for the northwestern singers and for my local church at times, while also writing and recording songs My Sounds on Soundcloud. I'll be opening for a gig this weekend in Rochester as well.
And that, my friends, is why this blog seems to be missing all the good stuff I've learned along the way. Perhaps a 2014 resolution will be to keep this blog from being stale.
